Purchasing an optimized sitar is of pivotal importance in sitar learning. SBSM recommends sitar purchases with the following specifications.
- Gandhar-Pancham sitar.
- The sitar should be made of seasoned Tun wood.
- Obtain sitar of shorter length, short by 2” to 3”. When the usual length is 4 ft. you should obtain sitar between 3 ft 9 inches to 3 ft. 10 inches. SBSM recommends shorter sitar.
- The width of the tabli should be around 13” and never more than 13.25”.
- The sitar should stay stable even with violent gamakas on any fret.
- The sitar should give meend range from Shuddha Ga to tar Sa from Ga fret.
- The sitar should give excellent sustenance.
Try getting a sitar of your choice by nicely interacting with the luthiers.
- Talk to Mr. Askok Sardar, M/s Manoj Sardar & Brothers, Lal Bazar Street, Rabindra Sarani, 6,8A, Bepin Behari Ganguly St, Lal Bazar, Kolkata [Opposite to Lalbazar Police Station gate.] before purchasing a sitar. 2. Talk to Mr. Nayeem Naushad Sitarmaker and tell him your requirements. Nayeem Naushad is good and responsive. This will assist in good sitar purchases. He may ask for some time to make your sitar ready. He arranges doorstep delivery at any point of the world. If you are a serious sitar-player then it may be good that you reach Mr. Nayeem and stay a few days, if required, to get your finer adjustments done.
