Know Your Musicians – Atreyee Majumder

Atreyee Majumder is one of Kolkata’s most sought-after female classical and semi-classical vocalists. She is a B. E. from Jadavpur University; still, she left a lucrative career in engineering and software to pursue her career in classical and semi-classical music. She received the prestigious Jadubhatta award, is a Sangeet Visharad from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith Lucknow, and completed Sangeet Praveen from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad.

The prestigious Jadubhatta award recipient, Atreyee, is a B. E. from Jadavpur University. She left a lucrative career in engineering and software to pursue her career in classical and semi-classical music.

After initial training from Smt. Ranjana Chakrabarty, Atreyee received training in Khayal from Pandit Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, a legendary Khayal singer of Bishnupur Gharana and Ex-Dean of Rabindra Bharati University. She received long training in Thumri, Dadra, and other forms of Purab Ang from Vidushi Purnima Chaudhuri, the legendary vocalist. In many concerts, she provided regular stage accompaniment and vocal support to her Guru, Vidushi Purnima Chaudhuri. This participation in providing vocal support played an essential role in developing Atreyee’s high musical understanding; it also helped to get established as an acclaimed performer.

Atreyee has widely performed in music festivals around the country, in several online programs organized internationally, and participated in reputed TV programs. Atreyee took active roles in fusion music projects with other instruments. She performed duet recitals with the flute and trios with sitar and sarod. She participated as a vocalist in the famous all-women classical band Narishakti.

Atreyee is involved in research in semi-classical music. She has introduced and composed contemporary lyrics in various types of semi-classical music. She presented many national and international workshops on the intricacies of classical and semi-classical music.

Atreyee is a renowned mentor and trained many disciples.
